In over 25 years as a
clinical social worker, Laurel Healy has worked in various
settings and modalities. Closest to her heart was her
animal-assisted therapy using her chinchilla, guinea pig, rabbit,
parrots and parakeets to connect with people nonverbally and
metaphorically.
Although her menagerie has shrunk,
she has two Yorkies who work with her in her private practice in Sarasota.
“Unless a client wants it otherwise, the dogs are in the room with us.” Laurel
says. “They give an enthusiastic greeting, fall asleep, then wake up to say
goodbye. The clients love it! It’s a stress reliever.”
Laurel also works part-time with The
Wellness Community, a national organization that works with cancer patients and
their families. Grief and loss as well as communication are Laurel’s
specialties, all of which she says are universal struggles.
For fun, Laurel likes to garden, be
physically active, dine out, and spend time with friends and animals.
